Sculptor Profile

Asaki Kajima

Respiration, Wire, clay, fibres, twine

Organisms from the ocean floor, creatures from deep underground, or parts of the human body.

The natural world and parallels are found in diverse biological structures.

Inspired by them, I expressed the consciousness of connection and disconnection with the environment.

The forms are frozen in a motion of exhalation, inhalation, mounting and multiplying.

Born and raised in Japan and later moving to New Zealand, Asaki is a sculptor of ethereal structures. Asaki’s work offers a very special look into a life of contrasts. They possess a mysterious quality, drawing people in and inviting a deeper look into their construction. Her visual language is one of nature-meets-manmade, a light and lively exploration and a yearning to make sense of things.  Winner of the 2020 Fieldays No.8 Wire National Art Award and finalist for the 2025 RT Nelson Awards for Sculpture, winner to be announced in late May 2025.
