Sculptor Profile
Jane Downes
Poppy seed pods, Corten steel
Nikau Vessels, Mild steel
The Seed Pods celebrate Plant Life Cycles, acting both as a reminder of the past and a promise of things to come.
Seed – Germination – Growth – Flowering – Pollination – Fertilization - Seed
Each Pod is from the same species but is unique in its shape, size and appearance. The seeds within store information for the next generation with their success dependent on receiving a nurturing environment.
Nikau Vessel I, II & III: Native Plants - Our National Heroes. Represented in the full round, the powerful structure and symmetry of the Nikau casts silhouettes against the sky.
Downes is a Sculptor/Designer from Canterbury who holds a Bachelor of Design from Christchurch Polytechnic. She exhibits at Galleries and major sculpture events throughout New Zealand, undertaking commissions and selling smaller works online.
Her work is mainly constructed from sheet metal and the artist uses shapes, forms and patterns that resonate with her.
Natural and manmade, often common or from childhood, sometimes delicate and fleeting objects from nature, sometimes robust geometric forms from popular culture and industry. Downes seeks to challenge preconceptions of purpose and beauty, valuable and lowly, masculine and feminine, permanence and the ephemeral.
