Sculptor Profile
Ricks Terstappen & Sharleen Gamble
Elephas Maximus, Steel
The Asian elephant is one of the world's most intelligent creatures, with strong family bonds, sophisticated forms of communication, complex behaviours, and an ability to feel grief and compassion, all while consuming a whopping 200 litres of water daily!
This sculptural piece is a celebration of a majestic beast classified as endangered.
Sharleen Gamble is a Hawke's Bay based sculptor who embraces and celebrates used and found materials. The sculptor's practices are directed and disciplined by her mindfulness of sustainability, careful to reutilize resources at hand in her attention to establish a relationship between her art and a sustainable future.
Ricks Terstappen, originally from the Netherlands, has called Hawkes Bay home since 1978. A prolific full-time artist, Ricks sees potential in found objects and scrap metal that others have discarded, giving new life to forgotten or disused items, bringing elements together to form a whole, both elevating and celebrating the materials.
