Artist Profile
Cate Godwin
My name is Cate Godwin. Some still remember me as Cate Fackney. I taught visual arts at secondary schools in Upper Hutt, Wairarapa College, and Hastings Girls High School.
I am currently teaching visual art part-time at Woodford House and teaching evening classes in printmaking at CAN and Keirunga Gardens.
I am an active member of the Print Council of Aotearoa, and Hawkes Bay Inkers. I exhibit regularly through these groups and I have had work in East and The Hawkes Bay Review.
'Signs and Symbols Flouro'
Artist: Cate Godwin
Description: [Digital Image Transfer with Chine Colle’ on Fabriano 220gsm Paper]
This image is from a collection of photographs I’m calling the Pavement Series. The photographs were taken whilst out walking in Raureka Hastings. There is a fluency to the spray painted images which speak to the workmen who understand their meaning.
“Flouro” is a celebration of the vibrant colours used to catch attention, convey a message and last, just long enough.
Connection to Roy: I did not know Roy well, but when I first met him as a student teacher he made a strong and favourable impression on me. He had a winning smile and as I observed him in his classroom with his students, he showed real interest in those he spoke with and genuine pleasure in sharing his ideas and enthusiasm for visual art to those he was mentoring.
I felt he would help me or advise me if I asked for his assistance.
The reason I remember him is for his passion for all things visual art and for knowing what he was talking about - which I believe is why students chose to study and work in the arts after being lucky enough to have him as their teacher.
