Untitled (Reclining Woman)'
Artist: Phil Judd
Description: [Pencil & Watercolour Wash] One of several pencil ‘fantasy’ drawings I did around this time. NB: Tim Finn (far right).
Connection to Roy: Roger B was painted during 1st year at Elam Art School aged 18. I dropped out after being hugely disappointed with art school.
Roy had the wisdom to let me be me & never criticized the why’s & wherefores of what I was doing. Elam was the opposite, my tutors etc were all early 70’s abstract painters & gave me bad attitude, actively trying to discourage me & an end of year just pass mark of C.
They told me that ‘realist’ art was dead & maybe I should quit art school & go work in advertising! I left art school at the beginning of 2nd year.
Roy had always encouraged to draw as much as possible. He was always inspiring & motivating. At 15 I got myself a good Pentax camera and a black & white developing and printing set up at home. He was fantastic, taking me on many weekend photography & drawing excursions.
