Sam Trubridge
Sam Trubridge is a scholar, producer, director, designer, and curator working in the performing arts.
He is artistic director for the trans-disciplinary performance company The Playground NZ and founding director of The Performance Arcade: a festival of performance art on Wellington Waterfront that is attended by 60-90,000 people each year since 2011.
With a PhD and an ‘A’ rating in both 2012 and 2018 PBRF reviews, Trubridge’s work is characterised by a robust creative practice and extensive scholarship. He has presented work and led workshops internationally.
In 2020 he completed a new work Ecology in Fifths – for presentation at Te Whaea National Centre for Dance + Drama, Hawkes Bay Arts Festival, and H Guthrie-Smith Centre in Tūtira.
Sam has presented work at festivals and venues in Europe, Australia, Asia, and the Americas. He has written articles on performance for various publications worldwide. He is currently the Oceanic editor for World Scenography, a survey of performance design from 1975-2020.
Sam has also been teaching arts and design practices for 20 years. He is currently a Senior Design Tutor at Toi Whakaari NZ Drama School.

'Life Drawing' (Slade School of Fine Arts 2002)

I have decided to submit three life-drawings from my studies at The Slade School of Fine Arts in UCL, London. They sit together as a triptych, a study of form, but also a celebration of the beauty of a simple line, and learning to love ink as a liquid medium with its own character.
They remind me of the many life-drawing classes I had with Roy, the companionable gathering of artists in his classroom every Tuesday evening, and his enthusiasm for everything we did. I only had him for one year in my 5th Form, but I feel he has been my teacher and mentor for a lot longer than this.

Connection to Roy: Roy was my art teacher in 5th Form at HNHS. After that I had other teachers, but he remained a part of my creative growth through the following years in a number of ways.
In our 7th Form he arranged an exhibition ‘The Neophytes’ at St George Winery - featuring myself and three of my classmates - Elton Gregory (an illustrator now living in the Wairarapa), Regan Gentry (a well presented NZ sculptor), and Matt Couper (a successful NZ painter now living and working in Las Vegas). Also in my class there was Sonya Lacey, nominee for the 2021 Walters Prize.
I continued my art studies with a BFA at Elam, and Roy would come up to Auckland to see the shows I directed: first The Tempest at YMCA Tepid Baths, then Henry V in a carpark with souped up motorbikes and cars. He was there for both shows. He was an incredible supporter of my work.
