'Stingray Carving'

Description: [Wood]

Tom primarily works in reclaimed native timbers, especially tōtara and swamp kauri, combined with copper and stone such as agate.

Most of his pieces feature large ocean creatures like whales and sharks, but he also carves penguins and other marine birds.

Connection to Roy: Roy was my art teacher in the fourth form (1989), and then again in
seventh form (1992). He was a fantastic educator and I loved his sense of humour,
involvement in every person’s work and his genuine love of his job and art.

He encouraged me into sculpture in seventh form, as I am colour-blind, so my paintings were often pretty horrible. I spent more time sculpting that year than the rest of my studies put together! We used to hang out in Roy’s room at lunchtimes cranking De La Soul, Beastie Boys etc.

My sculptures were all based around the landscape back then but now I have moved
to carving sea life in timber. I’m a teacher myself now (English at King’s College in Auckland) and I hope that I can channel Roy’s passion for his subject, his students, and life generally in my teaching.
