Walter Archer
For me this time and space provides the opportunity for a concentrated focus on a piece of artwork. My chosen concept was an appreciation for Te Reo Maori. What it means to Maori and all New Zealanders.
Te reo Maori is a foundation stone for Maoridom. Orally transmitting generational knowledge and traditions. Solidifying whakapapa (geneology), enforcing identity and ownership of who we are!
This painting illustrates a ceremonial carved walking stick called a TokoToko. It is a thing of beauty symbolic of authority and status used to direct and emblish the speaker. The carved images represent linage and the passing of that knowledge.
The pallet reflects a relationship in kinship. A time of transition from dark to light. The separation of Rangi (Sky father), Papatuanuk (Earth mother). In summary TE REO represents for me, identity and a new dawn for all Aotearoa’ers.
