'GABRIELLE'S PŪHORO' - Renee Makea

Renee Makea is a Māori contemporary artist based in Hastings, New Zealand.  She is currently studying Maunga Kura Toi - Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts (Level 7) at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.

As such Renee is the recipient of the David Fine Scholarship for 2025.  This Scholarship is awarded alternately to a Toimairangi (Te Wānanga o Aotearoa), or EIT, student for their final year of study.

The David Fine Scholarship, offered by the Arts Centre Trust, covers course fees for their final year, along with offering an exhibition space at the Hastings Arts Centre for the recipient to put together a body of work throughout the year.

Renee's creative journey began in childhood, inspired by the natural landscapes of her upbringing and a deep connection to storytelling through toi.

In 2023 Renee lost her home to Cyclone Gabrielle - a pivotal experience that became the foundation of her art practice.  What began as a way to process the overwhelming emotions of loss and grief through painting, evolved into a powerful discovery of her own unique style: contemporary kōwhaiwhai.

Her early works captured the raw emotion of the cyclone's aftermath, but over time, her use of kōwhaiwhai and bold, contrasting colour became a turning point - symbolising strength, resilience, and healing.  Renee's work is now defined by striking colour combinations, structural patterns, and the expressive use of kōwhaiwhai to honour memory, evoke emotion, and tell personal and collective stories.

Her kaiako, Wilray Price, has been a major influence in her development, with his approach to colour and technique playing a key role in shaping her practice.  Through her mahi, Renee offers not only visual beauty, but a space for reflection, connection, and the enduring spirit of moving forward.
