THE COOL ART WARM WOOL COLLECTION
Ōtāne Arts & Crafts History
The old Ōtāne School, where Ōtāne Arts and Crafts is situated, was opened in 1900 and for many years served the population of the area before a new school was built across the road in the 1960's. By 1970 the old school was to be demolished but a group of far sighted residents saw an opportunity to create a centre for the development of various arts and crafts.
A society was formed and the building was taken over by the District Council who leased it to the society. The centre was officially opened on 1st September 1970.
At present there are five groups which include the Patchwork and Embroidery; Wool and Fibre; Art; Mosaic; and Garden groups. The Art, and the Wool and Fibre groups have combined for 'The Cool Art Warm Wool Collection' here at the Hastings Arts Centre.
Otherwise the various groups meet to inspire, encourage and create with one another. OAC has an annual King’s Birthday Exhibition and Sale over the long weekend in Ōtāne. Members look forward to showcasing their art, patchwork and embroidery, mosaic, wool and fibre crafts. The garden group sells plants and preserves. There are also Devonshire Teas on offer which are very popular.
OAC members invite and welcome new members of all abilities and can be contacted through their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/otaneartsandcraftcorner
